Recipe Modifications
If you can’t find holy basil in the grocery store, Thai basil is good. And if there’s not Thai chilis, try serrano peppers instead. You can also mix and match regular soy sauce with low-sodium soy sauce. As written above, the recipe is slightly heavy on the sauce because I like to have some seep into the rice on the plate.
Why Pad Krappao?
Pad Krappao is my favorite meal from my time living in Berlin, and favorite food in general. Spicy, makes me feel good.
My co-workers from Barkow Leibinger and I would frequent My Thais for lunch, where I was introduced to Pad Krappao. Towards the end of my stay, I’d walk in, and before I could even order, they’d just start cooking it for me. Not because they didn’t care what I wanted. I just would rarely order anything else.
I asked for the recipe before I left. It was either a secret, or there was a language barrier with mein kaputt Deutsch. But, referencing the photos of my food and some online recipes, I’ve iterated a tasty recipe that’s as close to the real deal as I could get. Enjoy!
